If you don't have a router yet (perhaps you're upgrading to broadband, or you just need a new modem or router, or you would like to go wireless...) think about getting the 2-in-1. 

For the home environment, or the small office, the combo makes sense especially when considering the purchase price (starting under $50 for wireless).

If you are not technically oriented, then the best advice would be to accept a unit that your ISP offers.  At least get a recommendation from your ISP.   

A good ISP will help you install your device even if they didn't provide it; however, not all ISPs are created equal.
